The history of the Bay Leaf

Bay trees as they were originally known originated in Asia but then spread to the Mediterranean where they were named Laurel trees. The Laurel wreath has long been a symbol of victory and success and this stems back to the Ancient Greeks and the god Appollo. Even today there is a large association between a laurel wreath and being victorious.

Bay leaves are widely available as they are often used in cooking so you can probably even purchase them at the supermarket. Although they are safe to eat, it is not recommended that you eat a whole leaf as the texture is sharp and leathery and they can get stuck in your digestive tract and cause complications to your health. Instead, they are used in soups and stews for flavour and then removed before serving the dish.

Along with being available as leaves, you can also purchase bay oil
