The moon

As a child, I was always fascinated by the moon. I remember feeling as if it was following me and asking my mum why it was everywhere when we went out at night. I could not understand how it could be over our house when we got in the car and then after driving for twenty minutes we would get out of the car and it would be right above us! Now we live in a world where many people do not pay any attention to the moon anymore. I guess we take it for granted that it will always be there.

When you consider the power of the moon and what it does for our planet then it is not hard to see how connecting with the moon can help us not only in magick but in all aspects of our lives. The moon is so powerful, it controls the tides of our oceans. Seeing as we are at least 60% water, it is no wonder that many people say that they are affected by the different phases of the moon. The moon also controls how fast the earth rotates around the sun. It is said that if there was no longer a moon, the earth would orbit much faster so our years would become shorter.

As the moon orbits the earth, the energy that it has pulls and pushes much like the tides. With this knowledge, we can use this to our advantage.

The eight moon phases

It takes 3 weeks, 6 days and 7 hours for the moon to orbit the earth. However, when looking at working with the moon you are in fact looking at the time it takes for the moon to go from new all the way around and back to new. This takes on average 29.5 days and this is known as a lunar cycle. There are some great sites online that can tell you exactly what phase the moon is in, in relation to your location.

The new moon

The cycle starts with what is known as the new moon. However, it is sometimes called the black moon or the dark moon instead. It is when you can not see the moon in the sky or maybe you can see just the tiniest sliver and it lasts for a couple of days.

This is a time for looking inwards and setting your intentions for the month ahead. It is also a time to take care of yourself and practice self-care.

Activities may include:

  • Divination
  • Meditation
  • Self-care
  • Journalling
  • Making a vision board

Waxing Crescent Moon

As the moon continues to orbit the earth we move on to the waxing crescent phase. Waxing means growing or increasing and the crescent is referring to the shape of the moon in the sky. Think of it as the more moonlight we can see, the more lunar energy is being projected out towards the earth.

This is a time for planning how you will accomplish your intentions. You need to make actionable tasks and schedule them in your diary.

Activities may include:

  • Goal setting
  • Planning
  • Affirmations
  • Get outside in nature

First quarter

We are still waxing so our energy levels should be increasing. We are halfway to the full moon. Half of the side of the moon that we can see is lit up by the suns light reflecting on the surface of the moon.

We should now be taking the action that we have planned to achieve our goals for the month. This is a good time to get social and push ourselves.

Activities may include:

  • Meeting friends
  • Business meeting
  • Social hobbies
  • Waxing spellwork

Waxing Gibbous Moon

The Waxing Gibbous moon is the last phase before the full moon so energy is getting high and it is a good time for being busy and smashing those goals. The moon is giving you that last push of energy so that you can finish your tasks and projects.

The moon looks almost fully illuminated at this stage. Activities may include:

  • Finishing projects and tasks
  • Waxing spellcraft
  • Evaluate what has gone well and what areas need to change or improve.

Full moon

We are now at the full moon and halfway through the lunar cycle. We can see the whole of one side of the moon illuminated by the sun reflecting on the surface of the moon.

The full moon usually lasts for about three days in total which is why many people say that you can do full moon magick and rituals the day before or after as well as the night of the full moon. Your energy levels will be at their peak and you may find emotions bubbling up that have been hiding below the surface.

Many people like to do specific rituals for the full moon and each full moon has a different name that dates back to ancient times. More on this subject will be coming in later blog posts.

Generally, activities can include:

  • Taking a full moon bath
  • Charging crystals
  • Making moon water
  • Attending coven meetings
  • Healing magick
  • Wish spells
  • Divination

Waning Gibbous Moon

We are now moving into the waning part of the lunar cycle. The moon is now going to get smaller until it is back to the new moon and not visible. We have just had high energy full moon phase so this is the time that you may feel your energy dip as the moon gently pulls back that excess energy.

It is a time for being creative and taking time for yourself and your hobbies while continuing any tasks that still need completing for this month’s intentions. A time for slowing down a little from the busyness of the waxing and full moon phases.

Activities may include:

  • Waning spellcraft
  • Creative hobbies
  • Mindfulness such as colouring in

Last Quarter

The moon is three quarters through its cycle and showing us to release and let go in order to start a new cycle. This part of the cycle is about using your experiences from the previous phases to let go of the things that are not helping you.

What things got in the way of you accomplishing your tasks and manifesting your intentions. Are there people, or even yourself that are sabotaging you? Perhaps you need to let go of preconceived ideas and accept where you are in your life. This is the time to explore and let go.

Activities may include:

  • Waning spellcraft
  • Cleansing or smudging
  • Cleaning and decluttering

Waning Crescent Moon

The last phase of the lunar cycle is when the moon is getting much less visible. The moon is letting go ready to begin the cycle again. The energy has decreased and it is a time for slowing down and contemplating how the month has gone.

Activities may include:

  • Meditation
  • Planning your next steps for the new moon
  • Gratitude for all you have received

Waxing spellcraft

As the waxing moon phases are all about things growing and increasing, this is a good time for spellwork that involves you drawing something to yourself. For example;

  • Attracting love or friendship
  • Attracting prosperity
  • Finding a new job or home
  • Increasing your happiness
  • Personal growth or developing a talent

Waning spellcraft

The waning moon phases are all about letting go and decreasing so this is a good time for spellwork that involves eliminating things from your life. For example;

  • Weight loss spells
  • Cutting ties with toxic people
  • Hex removal
  • Reducing debts
  • Banishing bad habits
