What is Sage?

Sage (Salvia Officinalis) comes in over 900 species worldwide. It can also be known as common sage, garden sage, or kitchen sage. There are other varieties of sage too such as white sage (Salvia Apiana) and Clary Sage (Salvia Sclarea).

It was used in Egyptian, Roman and Greek medicine and spiritualism. So there has been an extremely long history of our understanding of the cleansing and healing properties of sage.

Sage is available as a fresh herb, dried, as incense and as an oil. It is also something that is easily grown at home in pots or in your garden. Sage is also a well known cooking herb so of course is safe to consume.

It is worth noting that many people think of white sage when smoke cleansing but in fact, all varieties of sage are equally as good. White sage has been unethically over-harvested,  so it is better to use other varieties if you can. Also, the term smudging is now not used as it is deemed culturally inappropriate.
