Samhain correspondence

In this post, we are looking at Correspondence for Samhain. Samhain is one of the eight Pagan celebrations on the wheel of the year. This post covers corresponding colours, crystals, herbs, food, animals and spell work. Please note that this post may contain affiliate links. Samhain correspondence


Black is a colour of protection and safety. It is good for banishing spells, removing hexes or cruses and unblocking emotions. 

Orange is a combination of red and yellow. The yellow brings warmth and mental clarity, while the red brings intensity and power. Therefore, orange is very much linked to justice, ambition, and creativity.

Yellow is connected to happiness, joy and comfort. It is also linked to knowledge, inspiration, communication and growth.

Grey represents balance. It is halfway between black and white so is used to represent both light and dark, death and life. Grey candles are often used in divination and to honour our ancestors.

Purple is often associated with magick, psychic abilities and the astral plane. Purple candles are often used to aid meditation, dreamwork and strengthening connections with other realms. 

Brown is a grounding colour. It is very much connected to animals, home and stability. 


Obsidian – Black obsidian is a volcanic glass that is believed to be highly protective and grounding. It is said to be able to remove negative energy. It is often used as a scrying tool.

Hematite – Said to be an excellent stone for empaths. Hematite is a highly grounding stone with the ability to cleanse your environment allowing you to focus on what is important to you. It is also said to help raise confidence and self-esteem. 

Carnelian – Enhances creativity, helps you make career choices, boosts your energy so you can pursue your goals and helps you stay motivated.

Jet – Jet is a grounding and protective stone. It is said that it protects from negative energy and can help people resolve past difficulties. 

Onyx – Black onyx promotes strength and stamina. It is a grounding stone and is said to help you make good decisions. It is also known as a calming stone.

Smokey Quartz – Said to be great at improving one’s concentration. Smokey quartz is a grounding stone with the ability to change negative energies into more positive energy. Said to aid willpower and determination when faced with challenges. 

Moonstone – Moonstone is full of feminine energies and as such, is good for helping with female hormone issues, period pain, and fertility. It is said to promote psychic abilities and enhance intuition. It is a relaxing stone that calms the mind, promotes hope and optimism. Moonstone helps enhance inner strength.

Mugwort – Induces clear dreams and psychic abilities. It also offers protection. Good for banishing, creativity, divination, and guidance. A mild hallucinogenic that induces psychic visions. Use with care as contains Thujone that can be absorbed through the skin. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use this herb. Prolonged use or large amounts can result in serious illness. 

Patchouli – Patchouli is most often used in love and fertility magick. The patchouli scent can act as an aphrodisiac. It is also useful in prosperity spells, protection magick, and communication.

Lavender – Lavender can be used to attract love or friendship. It promotes calmness and happiness and is often used to aid good sleep

Yarrow – Yarrow is great at regulating energy and healing emotional/spiritual wounds. It is said to be good for love magick and attracting friendships into one’s life. It has also been traditionally used in divination work. 

Rosemary – Associated with purifying negative energy, enhancing memory and concentration, and promoting love/lust. Additionally, sleeping with rosemary under your pillow is said to prevent nightmares too. 

Sage – Sage is probably best known for its cleansing and purification uses, often used for smudging. However, it is also associated with healing, prosperity, dreams, and intuition.

Sandalwood – Sandalwood is highly relaxing with protective qualities so is often used for meditating. It corresponds with the moon so can be perfect for full moon rituals as well. It is associated with healing and purification.

Mandrake – Mandrake root is the part most often used in magick. Its shape often looks similar to a person and for this reason, was often used as a poppet. Mandrake is extremely toxic and legally restricted in some countries. 

Food and drink 

With Samhain being the last of the three harvests, foods that correspond are those that would be the last to be harvested each year. Fruit and vegetables such as pumpkins, squash, apples, turnips, potatoes, and other root vegetables. 

Other items relating to Samhain include; cider and wine,  soul cakes, pork, and stews.

Black Cat/All Cats – Traditionally linked to witches, cats are thought to be full of psychic energies. Dreaming of black cats can be a sign that you need to reconnect with your feminine energies. Black cats can symbolise advocacy, standing up in the face of prejudice, strength, powerful psychic ability, and beating the odds. 

Bat – The celts associated bats with the underworld. In Celtic folklore, bats could be tricksters. Dreaming of bats could mean that you need to check who you are spending time with as someone may be draining you of your energy. Dreaming of bats in a cave can symbolise that you need to look within yourself and see what needs working on. 

Owl – Owls are nocturnal so can watch over you as you sleep, keeping you safe. They are associated with protection and carrying messages of great wisdom. Owls represent the ability to navigate through any darkness we may encounter throughout our lives. 

Raven – The celts often associated ravens as messengers of the deities, doing their work. Ravens often symbolise battles and the ability to fight for oneself. Dreaming of ravens can symbolise that changes are on the way. 

Spider – Magick, fate, creation, and power are all associated with the spider. The celts associated small spiders with good luck and prosperity and considered it bad luck to kill one. It is said that dreaming of a spider can actually be a message from the goddess so it is important to note what the spider is doing and how it makes you feel so that you can interpret the message.
